A Straightforward Replacement or a New Installation?
The two can look similar once finished, but their electrical requirements—and costs—can be very different.
Like-for-Like Appliance Replacement
You're replacing an existing oven or cooktop in the same location, with a compatible appliance and a circuit that is already suitable.
- Existing power supply and cable are checked
- Appliance rating and connection method are verified
- Existing isolation and protective devices are assessed
- Electrical connection, testing and applicable documentation
Often the simpler option. A different model can still require changes even when the size looks identical.
New Appliance or Upgraded Electrical Supply
You're installing a new cooktop location, moving the oven, converting from gas or choosing an appliance with a higher electrical demand.
- New cable routes and dedicated circuit if required
- Switchboard space and available supply assessment
- Suitable switchgear, isolation and protection
- Coordination with other trades if gas, plumbing or cabinetry changes
More planning, clearer results. Have the electrical requirements checked before purchasing where possible.
Switching to an Induction Cooktop?
Induction is a popular kitchen upgrade, but the electrical requirements depend on the chosen model and the available supply at your property.
Before you book an induction installation
- Check the appliance rating. Induction cooktops have different maximum loads and some offer configurable power settings.
- Assess the existing circuit. Your current cooktop wiring may not suit the new appliance.
- Review switchboard capacity. A new circuit or switchboard work may be needed, but it is not automatic.
- Plan any gas disconnection. A licensed gasfitter must safely disconnect an existing gas cooktop.
- Confirm the benchtop cut-out. Cabinetry and stone changes are outside ordinary electrical connection work.
We can assess the electrical side and explain the work required before installation, including whether your current supply is suitable.
Gas to Induction: Who Does What?
Licensed gasfitter
Isolates and disconnects the existing gas appliance and manages gas installation work.
Licensed electrician
Checks supply, installs compliant electrical wiring where needed and connects the induction cooktop.
Cabinetmaker / stone specialist
Confirms any benchtop, cut-out or cabinet alterations required for the selected appliance.
You, the homeowner
Check the new appliance dimensions, induction-compatible cookware and installation requirements.
Does Your Oven or Cooktop Need a Dedicated Circuit?
A new appliance does not automatically mean a complete switchboard replacement. The right approach depends on the appliance load and the installation you already have.
Read the appliance specifications
The model’s electrical rating and connection instructions help determine the required wiring, isolation and protective devices.
Test the existing circuit
We assess cable suitability, circuit arrangement, condition and protective devices rather than assuming the old connection can be reused.
Upgrade only when needed
Where appropriate, we discuss a new circuit, isolator, safety protection or switchboard changes and quote the extra scope.
Electrical safety: In NSW, hardwired appliance installations and replacements are electrical work for licensed electricians. Applicable new or altered circuits require suitable protection and inspection. A Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) is required for electrical installation work, including like-for-like hardwired replacements.
Rangehood Installation: Electrical Connection vs Ducting
Choosing between a ducted and recirculating rangehood affects the physical installation. The electrical work depends on how the unit is powered and where it is positioned.
Slide-Out & Undermount
Common cabinet-mounted models. We can assess the power connection and any new outlet or wiring needed. Cabinet alterations depend on the unit.
Canopy Rangehoods
Wall-mounted or feature units may need suitable mounting, power and a compatible duct path. Ask us which parts of the installation we can provide.
Ducted vs Recirculating
Ducted models expel air through a suitable exhaust path. Recirculating models filter air and return it to the room. The appropriate option depends on the property.

Appliance Installation FAQs
Clear answers about ovens, induction cooktops, rangehoods, appliance circuits, licensing and Sydney installation costs.
Do I need an electrician to install an electric oven in NSW?
A plug-in appliance can often be connected to an existing suitable outlet as directed by the manufacturer. Any hardwiring, new wiring, new power point or electrical alteration must be carried out by a licensed electrician in NSW.
Can you replace my existing wall oven?
Yes, subject to the new model fitting the available space and the existing electrical circuit being suitable. We check the unit specifications and connection before completing the electrical work.
Can my new oven use the existing electrical circuit?
Sometimes. It depends on the oven’s rating, manufacturer instructions, cable, circuit protection and condition. A similarly sized appliance may have a different electrical load.
Does an induction cooktop need a dedicated circuit?
Many full-size induction models need a suitably rated dedicated supply, but requirements vary by appliance and some have configurable power limits. A licensed electrician should assess the specific model and existing circuit.
Do I need three-phase power for an induction cooktop?
Not necessarily. Many induction cooktops are compatible with single-phase supplies, while some larger models offer different supply configurations. The model instructions and available supply determine what is possible.
Can I replace a gas cooktop with induction?
Yes, provided the electrical supply and benchtop arrangement are suitable. A licensed gasfitter must disconnect the existing gas appliance; the electrician handles the electrical installation.
Will an induction cooktop require a new switchboard?
Not always. We assess the load, current switchboard, safety protection and available capacity. A new dedicated circuit or switchboard changes are recommended only where necessary.
Can you install a freestanding electric cooker?
We can assess and complete the electrical connection of suitable freestanding electric cookers, including any required circuit work. Delivery, anti-tip mounting and cabinetry/levelling requirements should be confirmed in the agreed scope.
Do you install rangehoods?
We provide rangehood electrical connections and can discuss mounting requirements for suitable units. New ducting, cabinetry alterations or roof penetrations may require separate trades and are not automatically included.
Do I need ducting for a rangehood?
It depends on the model. Ducted rangehoods exhaust air through a suitable path, while recirculating models use filters. Your chosen model and the property determine which option is appropriate.
Do you install dishwasher power points?
Yes. We can provide suitably located and protected power points and electrical wiring for dishwashers. Water, drainage and plumbing connections are separate from the electrical work.
Can you add power for my washing machine or dryer?
Yes. We can assess the laundry layout and install suitable electrical outlets or circuits where appropriate. Manufacturer ventilation, mounting and plumbing requirements must also be considered.
Can you connect an electric hot water system?
We can assess electrical supply, circuit protection and suitable electrical connection work for fixed hot water equipment. Plumbing and equipment-specific installation work must be handled by the appropriate trade.
Do new ovens and cooktops always need their own circuit?
The installation must meet the appliance instructions and applicable electrical rules. Whether the existing circuit can be retained or a dedicated circuit is needed is determined after assessment.
Can you install appliances bought from Bunnings, Harvey Norman or The Good Guys?
We can assess the electrical connection requirements for appliances you supply, regardless of retailer. Send us the exact model before booking so we can check suitability and scope.
How much does an oven or cooktop installation cost?
A straightforward like-for-like replacement may be a few hundred dollars in Sydney, but prices vary by connection and site conditions. New circuits, protection upgrades, mounting or other trades can increase the cost. Ible Electrical provides a job-specific quote.
Does the quote include removal of the old appliance?
Not automatically. We can clarify disconnection, physical removal, disposal and any cabinet changes when quoting. Our primary scope is electrical installation and connection.
Will I receive an electrical compliance certificate?
For electrical installation work, including like-for-like hardwired oven or cooktop replacement, NSW requires a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW). Your electrician must complete the applicable testing and submission requirements.
Can I install or reconnect a hardwired appliance myself?
No. Hardwired electrical connection or alteration is licensed electrical work in NSW. A homeowner may plug an appliance into an existing suitable socket as directed by the manufacturer, but must not carry out wiring work.
Can you complete several appliances in one visit?
Often, yes, if suitable materials and time are arranged and the project scope is clear. Let us know all appliances involved when requesting a quote.
Do you service Camden, Campbelltown, Narellan and Liverpool?
Yes. Ible Electrical works across Macarthur, Camden, Liverpool and surrounding South West Sydney suburbs. Contact us to confirm current availability.
