KNOW WHEN TO GET IT CHECKED

Signs Your Switchboard May Need an Upgrade

An older switchboard is not automatically illegal or unsafe. But these are good reasons to arrange an inspection and find out whether repairs, new protection devices or a full replacement are appropriate.

Ceramic or rewireable fuses

Older fuse boxes may lack the modern residual-current protection expected in updated installations.

No RCD safety switches

If you cannot identify safety switches with a TEST button, a licensed electrician can check which circuits are protected.

Repeated tripping or outages

Frequent trips may point to an appliance fault, wiring issue, overloaded circuit or protective-device problem. Diagnosis comes first.

Heat, buzzing or scorch marks

A hot enclosure, unusual noises or discolouration needs urgent professional attention.

Major new electrical loads

New air conditioning, induction cooking, workshops, solar systems or EV chargers can justify reviewing circuit and supply capacity.

Limited space or poor labelling

Overcrowded equipment or unclear circuit identification can make future alterations more difficult and may warrant improvements.

Burning smell, smoke or visible damage? Do not open or touch the switchboard or keep resetting a faulting device. Keep clear and contact a licensed electrician promptly. If there is fire or immediate danger, call 000.
SWITCHBOARD & CIRCUIT PROTECTION SERVICES

From a Single Safety Switch to a Full Switchboard Replacement

Not every property needs a complete new switchboard. We assess the condition of the existing enclosure, wiring, supply and protective devices before recommending the right scope of work.

Residential Switchboard Upgrades

Replacement of outdated switchboard equipment, modern circuit protection, clear circuit identification and testing appropriate to the installation. New enclosures and additional work are included where the assessment shows they are needed.

RCD Safety Switch Installation

Install or upgrade residual current devices to help protect people from electric shock. We check which circuits have protection and explain when a targeted retrofit may be suitable instead of replacing the whole board.

RCBO Installation & Circuit Upgrades

Install suitable RCBOs where required or recommended. Each RCBO combines residual-current protection with overload and short-circuit protection for its circuit, helping isolate faults more selectively.

Old Fuse Box & Ceramic Fuse Replacement

Replace ageing fuse equipment and assess associated earthing, board condition and wiring. Older switchboards may contain asbestos materials, so suspected asbestos is assessed before anything is disturbed.

Switchboard Inspection & Fault Diagnosis

Investigate tripping RCDs, nuisance outages, loose or deteriorated equipment and unexplained circuit problems. If the cause is a faulty appliance or circuit, we explain that before suggesting a switchboard replacement.

Preparing for EV Charging, Solar & Renovations

Review available capacity, circuit protection, enclosure space and future demand. More complex supply or metering alterations may involve appropriately authorised electrical service providers or your network provider.

CLEAR ADVICE, NOT JUST TECHNICAL JARGON

Safety Switch, Circuit Breaker or RCBO: What Is the Difference?

These devices perform different jobs. Understanding that difference makes it easier to compare quotes and know what is being installed.

RCD / SAFETY SWITCH

Helps protect people

Detects imbalance caused by leakage current and disconnects the protected circuit. An RCD alone does not provide overload or short-circuit protection.

CIRCUIT BREAKER / MCB

Helps protect wiring

Trips during overload or short-circuit conditions. An ordinary MCB is not a substitute for an RCD safety switch.

RCBO / COMBINED DEVICE

Both protections in one

Combines residual-current protection with overload and short-circuit protection. Individual RCBOs can also reduce how many other circuits lose power when one trips.

What about Type A safety switches?

Modern appliances can produce fault currents that older Type AC RCDs are not designed to detect adequately. Type AC RCDs cannot be installed in new electrical work in Australia. We select compliant protective devices for the circuit and connected equipment, rather than using one device type indiscriminately.

Read the Building Commission NSW RCD guidance.

WHAT TO EXPECT

A Proper Upgrade Starts With an Assessment

A switchboard is more than a box of switches. The existing circuits, earthing arrangement and supply all affect what can be safely fitted. Our aim is to recommend the right work, not sell a replacement you do not need.

  • Review the condition of the existing switchboard and identify circuits
  • Check safety-switch coverage and protection requirements
  • Assess circuit capacity and plans for additional loads
  • Explain the proposed enclosure, RCBOs, RCDs and any other devices
  • Complete appropriate installation testing and circuit labelling
  • Provide applicable electrical compliance documentation
PRICING & TRANSPARENCY

How Much Does a Switchboard Upgrade Cost in South West Sydney?

There is no reliable one-price-fits-all figure. Replacing a small group of protective devices costs differently from replacing an enclosure, altering mains, or dealing with damaged wiring or asbestos-containing materials.

Ible Electrical reviews the work required and provides an upfront quote so you can decide whether to proceed. We will explain when a smaller safety-switch or RCBO upgrade could be suitable.

What affects the final price?

  • Number of circuits and protective devices required
  • Condition, location and size of your existing board
  • Whether the switchboard enclosure needs replacement
  • Earthing, wiring, supply or metering alterations
  • Surge protection or provision for future circuits
  • Access, safe isolation and any identified asbestos risks

A photo of your switchboard can help with an initial conversation, but it does not replace an electrical assessment where one is necessary.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Switchboard Upgrade & Safety Switch FAQs

How do I know if my old switchboard needs replacing?

Ceramic fuses, missing RCDs, damaged equipment, repeated tripping or a planned high-demand appliance can justify an inspection. Age alone does not automatically mean full replacement is required. We assess whether targeted repairs, new protection devices or a new board are the appropriate option.

Can you install safety switches without replacing the entire switchboard?

Sometimes, yes. If the existing enclosure and installation are suitable, an RCD or RCBO upgrade may be possible without a full replacement. We need to inspect the available space, wiring and condition of the equipment before advising.

What is the difference between an RCD and an RCBO?

An RCD detects residual-current leakage to help protect against electric shock. An RCBO combines that protection with overload and short-circuit protection for the circuit. We select protection based on the installation and relevant requirements.

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost?

The quote depends on circuit count, enclosure condition, wiring, earthing, protection devices and whether supply or metering work is necessary. We provide an upfront assessment and quote before starting the approved work.

How long will the power be off?

Power must be isolated for relevant switchboard work. Many straightforward residential jobs can be completed within a day, but more involved upgrades can take longer. We explain the expected interruption once the scope is confirmed.

Is an old ceramic fuse box automatically illegal?

No. An older switchboard is not necessarily unlawful simply because of its age. Its condition, protection and any alterations being carried out determine what work is needed to meet applicable electrical safety requirements.

Could my older switchboard contain asbestos?

Yes. Some older fuse carriers and electrical backing boards used asbestos-containing materials. Do not drill, cut or disturb a suspect board. If asbestos is suspected, it must be assessed and managed appropriately before affected work proceeds.

Do I need a new switchboard for an EV charger, solar or air conditioning?

Not always. A licensed electrician should check supply capacity, available space and the circuits and protection required. Some properties can support the installation with alterations to the existing board; others need more substantial upgrades.

Do you provide a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work?

For electrical installation work that requires one, the appropriate testing and CCEW process is completed in accordance with NSW requirements. We can explain the documentation relevant to your job.
