Circuit capacity matters

When Do You Need an Additional or Dedicated Electrical Circuit?

A new power point and a new circuit are not the same thing. A power point provides somewhere to plug in. A dedicated circuit has its own supply wiring and appropriate circuit protection from the switchboard for equipment or loads that need it.

Additional outlets can improve convenience, but adding sockets to an existing circuit does not increase the circuit's electrical capacity. If the connected appliances could overload the circuit, the correct solution may involve a new circuit, changes at the switchboard or adjusting the planned equipment.

  • Ovens, cooktops and other cooking appliances: circuit needs depend on the appliance manufacturer's instructions and demand.
  • High-demand laundry or garage equipment: assess rating, use patterns and other connected loads.
  • 15A and special-purpose outlets: different wiring and protection arrangements may be required; a standard 10A socket is not interchangeable.
  • Outdoor power for equipment: load, exposure and isolation requirements affect design.
  • EV charging: a dedicated EV charger often requires its own appropriately protected circuit and supply assessment.

How Much Does Power Point Installation Cost in Sydney?

Outdoor power, planned properly

Weatherproof Outdoor Power Point Installation

Need an outlet for the alfresco dining area, pressure washer, shed or pergola lighting? Outdoor installations need more planning than simply fitting a socket to the nearest exterior wall.

We consider where rain and water spray can reach, suitable enclosure and socket ratings, mounting surfaces, circuit protection and the safe route for cabling. A covered patio still needs an assessment of its actual exposure.

  • Single and double weatherproof outlets in appropriate locations
  • Pergola, alfresco and suitable outdoor kitchen power
  • Garage, shed and workshop supplies
  • Power for appropriately specified fixed equipment
  • Suitable RCD / RCBO protection and testing
Smarter power placement

Good outlet placement is about how you actually use the room. We can discuss practical positions, usable clearances, circuit loading and a tidy finish before installation.

01 / 06

Bedrooms & Home Offices

Convenient sockets near desks, bedside furniture, printers and work equipment, with USB options where suitable.

02 / 06

TV Walls & Living Areas

03 / 06

Kitchens & Laundries

Better access for everyday equipment, with individual appliance ratings assessed before connection.

04 / 06

Garages & Workshops

Wall and bench outlets positioned for your workflow, plus appropriately designed dedicated circuits where required.

05 / 06

Alfresco & Pergolas

Power for outdoor entertaining and lighting with properly located weatherproof fittings.

06 / 06

Renovations & Extensions

Recent Project: Pergola Power Points & Dedicated Circuit in Oran Park

A practical example of how extra power points and an appropriate new circuit can improve an outdoor living area. This job is already documented on Ible Electrical's Oran Park electrician page.

Outdoor electrical upgrade · Oran Park

More usable power for an outdoor entertaining area

For an Oran Park homeowner, our team completed an outdoor pergola electrical upgrade that included a dedicated electrical circuit with safety switch protection, several weatherproof outdoor power points and new pergola lighting.

The installation was planned around the existing structure and exterior conditions, with attention to outlet placement, suitable fittings and a neat result. It is an example of why outdoor power jobs may involve more than simply adding another socket.

Frequently asked questions

Power Point Installation & Dedicated Circuit FAQs

Clear answers to common questions about extra outlets, weatherproof power, costs, wiring and electrical safety.

How much does it cost to install a power point in South West Sydney?

The price varies with the type of outlet, existing wiring and protection, wall material and cable length. Sydney guides often suggest roughly $250–$450 or more for a new indoor double outlet on a suitable existing circuit; more complex work costs more. These are market estimates, not Ible Electrical's fixed rates. We provide an upfront quote for your actual job.

Can you install additional power points in an existing home?

Usually, yes, provided the existing circuit and installation can safely support the addition. An electrician will assess cable routes, circuit loading, protection and the planned outlet location.

Can you turn a single power point into a double power point?

Often, yes. A compatible double outlet may replace an existing single outlet where the wiring and mounting arrangement are suitable. The circuit capacity does not increase simply because the socket has two outlets.

Do I need a new circuit for another power point?

Not always. A new outlet can sometimes connect to a suitable existing circuit. New dedicated circuits may be needed for larger loads, particular appliances or when circuit design and protection require them.

Do extra power points prevent an electrical circuit from overloading?

Not by themselves. More outlets reduce the need for adapters and extension leads, but do not increase the rated capacity of the original circuit. High electrical demand must be assessed, and a new circuit may be needed.

Can you install weatherproof outdoor power points?

Yes. We can assess outlets for pergolas, garages and outdoor areas, selecting suitable fittings, placement and protection for the actual exposure. Pool and other special locations have extra restrictions.

What does the IP rating on an outdoor power point mean?

An IP rating describes resistance to dust and water ingress under defined test conditions. The needed rating depends on the setting, mounting and exposure. A suitably rated outlet still needs correct placement and electrical installation.

Can you install power points behind a wall-mounted TV?

Yes, subject to access and the existing circuit. We can discuss outlet positions that keep power accessible while reducing visible cables; any data or AV cabling also needs suitable routing.

Can I have USB-A or USB-C power points installed?

Often, yes. Compatible USB outlets can be installed or used to replace a suitable existing fitting. Charging speed varies by the USB outlet model, so share your device requirements when requesting a quote.

Do kitchens, laundries or ovens need dedicated circuits?

Some appliances need individual circuits or specific ratings under the appliance instructions and applicable wiring rules. An electrician should check the appliance nameplate, existing circuit and available switchboard capacity before deciding.

Can you install a 15 amp power point in my garage?

Potentially, following assessment. A 15A outlet is not a simple substitute for a standard 10A outlet; the circuit, wiring, protective devices and intended equipment must be suitable.

Do you install new circuits for EV chargers?

Yes, subject to assessment. Fixed EV chargers normally require appropriately designed dedicated supplies and protection. See our EV charger installation service for more information.

Do I need a licensed electrician to change a power point in NSW?

Yes. NSW Government guidance states that installing, replacing and moving fixed power points is licensed electrical work, not DIY. Appropriate testing and compliance documentation apply.

Can you install power points in double-brick or tiled walls?

Often, but the available wiring route and finish may differ from plasterboard walls. Masonry drilling, surface conduit or patching may be needed. We explain the practical options before proceeding.

Can you install multiple power points in one visit?

Yes, subject to the work and scheduling. Combining several outlets in one appointment can share travel and setup time, but each point still requires compliant wiring and testing.

Will you need to turn off the electricity during installation?

Yes, the affected electrical supply must be safely isolated for relevant wiring work. The length of interruption depends on the installation. We can discuss this before the appointment.

Do you provide a Certificate of Compliance Electrical Work?

NSW requires a Certificate of Compliance Electrical Work (CCEW) for applicable electrical wiring work, confirming required tests and compliance. We provide required documentation for work carried out.

Do you service Oran Park, Campbelltown, Camden and Liverpool?

Yes. Ible Electrical works across South West Sydney, especially Macarthur, including Oran Park, Campbelltown, Camden, Narellan, Gregory Hills, Liverpool and surrounding suburbs. Contact us about appointments at your address.
