Reliable connections where you need them

Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Home Network Cabling Explained

Better connectivity often comes from installing a wired connection in the right location—not simply replacing a router.

When should you install Ethernet points?

A direct wired connection can reduce reliance on wireless coverage for home offices, streaming devices, gaming consoles and networked equipment. Ethernet is particularly useful where brick walls, multiple storeys or the distance from the router affect Wi-Fi performance.

A data point generally runs back to a router, network switch or patch panel. Installing an outlet in the room alone will not provide internet unless the other end is connected to the working network.

  • Reliable connections for work-from-home setups
  • Data outlets behind wall-mounted televisions
  • Ethernet backhaul for Wi-Fi access points
  • Wired links for network printers, storage and PoE devices
  • Internal cabling arrangements suited to existing nbn equipment
Choose the right approach

Cat6, Cat6A, Wi-Fi or a Network Switch?

These terms are often used interchangeably, but they solve different problems.

Cat6 cable

Practical for many homes

Widely used for fixed network runs and gigabit connections, with higher performance possible under suitable installation conditions and equipment. A sensible starting point for many standard data outlet jobs.

Cat6A cable

For planned higher-capacity links

Useful where longer high-speed runs, denser cabling or future network requirements justify the extra material and installation considerations. Not every home needs it.

Wired Wi-Fi access point

Coverage without guessing

A well-placed access point connected by Ethernet can help extend wireless service. The overall experience still depends on internet speed, wireless environment, hardware and configuration.

Important: A Cat6 cable does not increase the speed of your internet plan. It can improve the quality and capacity of the connection between compatible devices on your local network.

Security system planning

CCTV Cameras, PoE Cabling & Home Security Infrastructure

A good security system starts with useful camera positions, reliable power/network connections and a clear plan for recordings—not simply buying the highest-resolution camera.

Planning a wired CCTV system

For compatible IP cameras, Power over Ethernet (PoE) can carry data and power through a suitable network cable. Planning should consider the camera's view, cable access, compatible PoE switch or NVR, lighting, recording storage, remote access and weather exposure.

It also matters where cameras point. Avoid unnecessary coverage of neighbours' private areas and consider any strata, tenancy or workplace surveillance obligations that apply to the property.

  • Front entrances, driveway and side access coverage
  • PoE camera network and cable-route planning
  • Suitable communications and recorder locations
  • Power and electrical infrastructure where required
  • Intercom, video doorbell and gate access discussions
  • Recording retention and phone access requirements

Compliance and handover

Why Registered Cabling & Correct Security Licensing Matter

Good network performance and lawful installation go together.

Communications cabling registration

ACMA requires fixed customer telecommunications cabling to be performed or supervised by a registered cabler with the appropriate registration and any necessary specialised competencies. Structured cabling endorsement is relevant to work such as Cat6 network installation.

Registered cablers should provide the appropriate cabling completion or compliance advice documentation after relevant work.

Security equipment is a separate category

NSW's Class 2C security licensing requirements can apply to CCTV, alarms and other regulated equipment. Having an electrical licence or open cabling registration alone does not replace these security licence requirements.

Where a job includes fixed 230 V wiring, that part must also be performed by an appropriately licensed electrical worker.

Frequently asked questions

Data Cabling & Security Installation FAQs

Answers to common questions about Cat6 outlets, Wi-Fi, CCTV, costs and NSW installation requirements.

How much does it cost to install a data point in South West Sydney?

Published Sydney market guides show a broad indicative range of roughly $150–$400 for one Cat6 outlet in an existing home. The actual quote depends on roof or wall access, length of run, building construction and what is included. This is market guidance, not Ible’s fixed price.

Can you install Ethernet data points in an existing home?

Often, yes. A registered cabler assesses whether cable can be run through suitable wall, ceiling or underfloor spaces. Double-brick buildings, finished ceilings and two-storey construction can make access more complex.

Is Cat6 or Cat6A better for a house?

Cat6 is suitable for many home networks. Cat6A may be worth discussing when higher-speed links, longer runs or future equipment requirements justify the additional cost and installation considerations.

Will Ethernet make my internet faster?

Ethernet can make the connection between compatible local devices more stable and reduce some Wi-Fi limitations. It cannot exceed the speed of your internet service plan or automatically fix faults outside your property.

Can a wired access point improve Wi-Fi coverage?

It can help, especially where Wi-Fi is weak in distant rooms or across storeys. Placement, building materials, interference, device capabilities and configuration still affect wireless performance.

Can you add a data point behind a wall-mounted TV?

A data outlet can often be installed at a suitable TV position, subject to building access and cable routing. Power and data services must be installed according to their separate requirements.

Do I need an electrician or registered cabler for data cabling?

Fixed customer telecommunications cabling requires an appropriately registered cabler under ACMA rules. A licensed electrician who lacks the required cabling registration and competencies is not automatically authorised to perform that work.

Can you move my nbn modem or connection box?

We can discuss internal customer-side cabling and placement requirements. Equipment and cabling owned or controlled by the nbn network provider must only be altered by people authorised for that work.

What is a patch panel?

A patch panel is a central termination point for multiple fixed data cable runs. Short patch leads then connect the required outlets to network switches or other equipment, simplifying organisation and future changes.

What is Power over Ethernet (PoE)?

PoE is a way for compatible network equipment to deliver power and data along suitable Ethernet cabling. It is commonly used for certain IP cameras, wireless access points and network devices.

Do wireless security cameras still need cabling?

Some cameras run on batteries, while others require mains power or network cabling. Wired PoE cameras usually need a suitable cable run to network and recording equipment. The correct choice depends on the specific product and location.

Can an electrician legally install CCTV cameras in NSW?

Not on an electrical licence alone. NSW Police advises that security camera supply, installation, servicing or repair for clients generally requires a Class 2C security licence, with appropriate business licensing as applicable.

How many CCTV cameras do I need?

The useful number depends on entrances, outdoor areas, blind spots, camera field of view, lighting and recording goals. A layout with fewer well-positioned cameras can outperform a larger poorly positioned system.

Can I view security cameras from my phone?

Many compatible systems support phone access. Functionality depends on the selected camera/recorder, network configuration and any security/privacy settings or subscriptions. This should be clarified in the equipment proposal.

Will installing CCTV breach my neighbour’s privacy?

Camera placement and the use of audio or video recordings can raise privacy, tenancy, strata or workplace surveillance issues. Plan views to minimise unnecessary coverage of others’ private areas and seek advice if the situation is uncertain.

Can you install CCTV and networking for businesses?

Data and network cabling for offices and small businesses can be scoped according to registration requirements. Regulated CCTV equipment installation must separately be undertaken by appropriately licensed security personnel.

Do you install data cabling in Camden, Campbelltown and Liverpool?

Ible Electrical services South West Sydney, including Campbelltown, Camden, Narellan, Oran Park, Liverpool and surrounding suburbs. Confirm availability and the precise cabling or security scope when enquiring.

What should I send for a quote?

Your suburb, number of points, approximate locations, building type, location of the router or recorder, and a few photos. For CCTV enquiries, tell us what areas you want to cover and whether you already own equipment.
