The Right EV Charger Starts With the Right Electrical Setup
A wall-mounted AC EV charger can make daily charging far more convenient. But the best installation isn't necessarily the highest kW rating or the most expensive unit—it is the one that suits your vehicle, your home, your electricity plan and the way you drive.
Quick answer: A single-phase charger delivering up to approximately 7.4 kW is enough for many households charging overnight. An 11 kW or 22 kW three-phase-rated unit may suit some properties, but actual speed is restricted by your home's supply, charger settings and the car's onboard AC charging capability. We can assess these before recommending equipment.

7 kW vs 11 kW vs 22 kW EV Chargers: What's the Difference?
You don't automatically get a faster charge just because a wallbox is labelled “22 kW”. The car and property must both support that output. This is one of the first things we recommend checking before purchase.
| Charging setup | Typical rated output | What to know | Common fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard 10 A outlet with approved portable EV equipment | Up to ~2.3 kW | Slowest option; outlet condition, circuit loading, portable equipment and manufacturer limits matter. | Occasional or low-mileage charging where suitable. |
| Single-phase wallbox | Up to ~7.4 kW at 32 A | Often a substantial improvement over portable charging; can be current-limited where necessary. | Many detached homes and overnight charging routines. |
| Three-phase wallbox | Often 11 kW at 16 A/phase | Requires appropriate three-phase supply and a vehicle able to accept the power. | Suitable three-phase properties and higher daily mileage. |
| 22 kW-rated three-phase wallbox | Up to ~22 kW at 32 A/phase | Many cars cannot accept 22 kW AC. Network capacity and charger settings may reduce output. | Specific compatible vehicles and suitable electrical infrastructure. |
These are approximate AC power ratings, not guaranteed charging speeds. Actual charging varies with voltage, equipment settings, electrical capacity, battery state and your vehicle's onboard AC charger. Tesla's current Australian Wall Connector is rated up to 11 kW—not 22 kW. See Tesla's Australian technical guidance.
Which is better for a Tesla?
Choose a charger and electrical configuration that match your Tesla model's onboard AC charging capabilities. A Tesla Wall Connector can also charge many compatible non-Tesla EVs using an appropriate connector and access settings.
What about BYD, MG, Hyundai and Kia?
Many Australian-market EVs use Type 2 AC charging, but supported charging rates vary between models and variants. Tell us your vehicle model and year so the proposed charger makes sense for your actual charging limit.
We can also discuss buying a unit that will suit a future second vehicle.
How Much Does EV Charger Installation Cost in South West Sydney?
There isn't one installation price that fits every home. Charger hardware, cable routing, switchboard condition and supply capacity usually matter more than the suburb itself.
A broad budgeting guide for a residential AC charger supplied and installed. A straightforward job may be less; a difficult cable run, premium charger, supply alteration or switchboard upgrade can cost more. This is not an Ible Electrical quote.
Market guidance compiled from published Sydney installer ranges and NSW Government advice, as at October 2026. Figures vary by inclusions and GST treatment. Request an itemised site-specific quote rather than relying on an average.
What affects the final price?
Want a more accurate quote? Send us a photograph of your switchboard, a photograph of where you park, the approximate distance between them and the EV/charger model. We can then determine whether further information or an on-site assessment is needed.
Will You Need a Switchboard Upgrade or Load Management?
Not every home needs a full switchboard replacement to install an EV charger. The right answer depends on your existing supply, the other electrical loads in your home, the charger and the required circuit protection.
For example, a newer property in Oran Park or Gregory Hills might have a modern switchboard but still need its spare capacity checked. An older home elsewhere in Campbelltown or Liverpool may need closer investigation of its protective devices, cabling and available capacity.
When suitable, charger load management can reduce charging current as other appliances operate. That may help avoid unnecessary supply upgrades, but it is not a substitute for proper assessment or compliant wiring.
- Existing main switchboard capacity and condition
- Other high-demand appliances and supply limitations
- Dedicated circuit and appropriate protection
- Charger manufacturer's electrical requirements
- Network or service connection requirements, if relevant
What is dynamic load management?
Some smart charging systems use metering to monitor household electricity demand. When appliances like air conditioning or cooking equipment need more power, the EV charging rate can be reduced automatically.
The feature is equipment-specific and may require additional metering or communications hardware. It isn't available on every charger.
Solar charging: Some compatible chargers can follow surplus solar output so more of your own generation goes into the EV. This depends on compatible hardware, measurement and your usage patterns.
If alterations to the network connection or consumer mains are required, additional approvals and appropriately authorised service providers may be needed. An ordinary home wallbox installation does not automatically require Level 2 ASP work.

EV Charger Installation FAQs
Practical answers for homeowners comparing charging speeds, installations and costs in South West Sydney.
How much does it cost to install an EV charger in South West Sydney?
As a general Sydney market guide, charger hardware plus professional installation often falls around $1,200–$3,500 or more. Your quote depends on the charger, cable run, switchboard capacity, mounting arrangement and other work needed. This range is not a fixed Ible Electrical price.
Can you install an EV charger that I've already purchased?
Contact us with the brand and model. We can discuss an installation-only quote where the equipment is suitable, compliant and compatible with the proposed electrical setup. Some manufacturers have specific commissioning or installer requirements.
Is a 7 kW charger enough for most homes?
Often, yes. A 7–7.4 kW single-phase charger can provide convenient overnight charging for many drivers. The right answer depends on kilometres driven, the hours your vehicle is parked and the property's electrical capacity.
Do I need three-phase electricity for an EV charger?
No. Many households use single-phase home EV charging effectively. Three-phase charging may be useful for certain vehicles and usage patterns, but it isn't automatically necessary.
Will a 22 kW charger charge my car at 22 kW?
Only if the vehicle supports 22 kW AC charging and your supply and installation can deliver it. Many EVs have lower onboard AC charging limits, so a higher-rated wallbox may not increase charging speed.
Can a Tesla Wall Connector charge BYD or other electric vehicles?
Tesla's Australian Wall Connector is compatible with many non-Tesla EVs, subject to connector compatibility and the charger's access configuration. Check your specific vehicle and wallbox model before purchase.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade for a home EV charger?
Not necessarily. We need to assess the existing board, supply capacity, required circuit protection and the charger. In some situations a suitable current-limited or load-managed solution may be an option; other properties need board or supply alterations. Read our switchboard upgrade information.
Can an EV charger use electricity from my solar panels?
Some compatible smart chargers can adjust charging to make greater use of surplus solar generation. This may require additional hardware or monitoring and should be matched to your inverter, charger and energy-use patterns.
Can an EV charger be installed outside?
Yes, where a suitable charger and mounting location are selected. Weather exposure, physical protection, access to parking and appropriate wiring methods need to be considered.
How long does installation take?
Some straightforward residential installations can be completed within a day. Difficult cable routes, switchboard work, network alterations and site approvals can extend the timeframe. We can give a more useful estimate after reviewing the property.
Can I install a charger at a townhouse or strata property?
Potentially, but shared wiring, parking ownership and owners corporation or landlord approvals may apply. These should be checked before committing to the installation. The NSW Government has guidance for EV charging in apartments and strata buildings.
What paperwork should I receive after the installation?
Electrical wiring work in NSW is subject to the relevant Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) process. Installation testing and any required notifications or approvals should be handled by the electrician in line with current NSW requirements.
What should I send to get an accurate EV charger installation quote?
Send your suburb, vehicle make/model, charger brand if known, photographs of your switchboard and preferred mounting location, and an approximate distance between them. Request your quote here, or call (02) 8999 5280.
